WOK STORIES

Wok Stories  is a social movement which seeks to raise awareness about the hawker culture in Singapore. From the streets to open-air complexes, and to the hearts of Singaporeans, hawkers and their food used to be the beacon of unity and pride of the people. However, modernisation has altered social ideals and made the art of hawking seem less attractive; this is exacerbated by the predominantly old and frail population of hawkers. These factors, among many others, contribute to the challenges that the hawkers are currently facing.

 

We will be working with different generations of hawkers as well as experts in the field to foreground the blood, sweat, tears, and joy that go into making hawking the shining gem it is today. With their stories, we hope to not only raise awareness of this issue, but to also shift public’s attitudes on the local hawker culture in order to spur continuity.

 

Mission

Our mission is to foreground the stories of hawkers and let their voices and concerns be heard by the larger public in Singapore.

 

Vision

Our vision is to shift the attitudes of Singaporeans on the art of hawking and spur the public to have stronger interest in the hawker culture to spur continuity and preserve our heritage.
