Lian Yuan Vegetarian, located at Geylang Bahru Food Centre is operated by Mdm Tan Siew Giok who has started the hawker business in 1984 with the encouragement from her aunt. The 57 years old Mdm Tan has a warm and motherly demeanour which makes it easy for people to approach.

 

It has been 30 years since she sold her first plate of vegetarian food in Geylang Bahru Food Centre. She used to teach vegetrian cooking classes at the temple for three years and often flipped through cookbooks in her spare time to adapt those recipes that are suitable for the needs of a vegetarian.

 

Her love and passion for food coupled with her determination and grit, is what she felt helped her to overcome all the huddles thus far. She is confident that the hawker scene will persist for a long while more as it is under the purview of the government. However, she admits that it would definitely be difficult for future hawkers who will have their own new sets of problems.
